Rotary Printing Problems – 3 Common Failures and Fixes

2026-10-20  | 47 Views

Introduction

Rotary UV printing looks simple: load the bottle, press print, and the design wraps around. In practice, three problems show up again and again. Knowing what causes them—and how to prevent them—saves wasted bottles, wasted ink, and unhappy customers. A rotary printing problems checklist should be part of every operator’s routine.

Rotary Printing Problems – 3 Common Failures and Fixes

Rotary Printing Problems 1 – The Seam Line

On a 360° wrap, the start and end of the image must meet perfectly. If they do not, you get a visible line running vertically down the bottle. The cause is usually calibration drift. The rotary encoder that tracks rotation position is slightly out of sync with the printhead movement. Over a full revolution, the error accumulates and shows up at the seam . The fix is a 2-point calibration before production. Print a thin line, rotate 180°, print another line, and check alignment. If the lines are not equidistant from the axis, adjust the printhead height until they are . Some systems use pneumatic clamping to eliminate play in the fixture, which reduces seam drift .

Rotary Printing Problems 2 – Density Gradients

On a tapered bottle, the print looks darker at one end and lighter at the other. This happens when the machine assumes a constant diameter. The surface travel per degree of rotation is different at every height, so ink spacing changes. The fix is taper compensation in the RIP software. The software must calculate a local scaling factor for every row of the image and adjust the pixel width dynamically . Without this, the gradient is unavoidable.

Rotary Printing Problems 3 – White Ink Fading

White ink is essential for printing on dark or transparent bottles. But titanium dioxide particles in white ink settle over time. If the ink is not circulated or agitated, the white layer becomes weak and inconsistent . The fix is regular circulation. Many industrial printers have a white ink circulation system that runs during pauses. If your machine lacks this, shake the white ink cartridge before each session and print a few solid white blocks to flush the settled ink . Keeping humidity between 40% and 60% also helps prevent the ink from drying in the nozzles . A rotary inkjet printer with a white ink circulation system handles this automatically.

Build a Pre-Flight Checklist

The best way to avoid these failures is a routine. Check the seam calibration. Confirm the taper profile is loaded. Circulate the white ink. Print a test strip. It takes five minutes. It prevents hours of rework and a rejected order. Most rotary printing problems are preventable with a simple routine.
